MOT pass rate & common faults

About the MG MGF
The MGF (1995–2002) marked MG’s return to the affordable mid-engined roadster, with Hydragas suspension and the K-Series engine mounted behind the seats. It is characterful, cheap to buy and enjoyable to drive, and a strong specialist scene keeps them on the road. The K-Series is known for head-gasket failure if cooling is neglected, so evidence of a modern uprated gasket and a healthy cooling system is a major plus. As with all cars of this age and price, condition and history matter far more than mileage.

MG MGF: FAQs
Does the MGF have head-gasket problems?
The K-Series engine can suffer head-gasket failure if the cooling system is neglected. A car with a documented modern (uprated) head gasket and a healthy, well-maintained cooling system is strongly preferable.
Is the MGF a good affordable classic?
Yes — it is one of the cheapest mid-engined roadsters to buy, with a strong specialist and club scene. Buy on condition and cooling-system history rather than the lowest price.
What is the difference between the MGF and MG TF?
The TF (2002–2011) replaced the MGF’s Hydragas with conventional coil-spring suspension and sharpened the styling and handling. Mechanically they are closely related; the TF is the later, more focused development.
