About the MG TF

The MG TF (2002–2011) is the sharper, conventionally-sprung development of the mid-engined MGF. It swapped Hydragas for coil springs, revised the styling and improved the handling, while keeping the K-Series engine behind the seats. Affordable, characterful and well supported by specialists, it shares the MGF’s key checkpoint: the K-Series head gasket, so evidence of a modern uprated gasket and a healthy cooling system is important. Condition, cooling history and a documented service record matter more than mileage.

MG TF: FAQs

Is the MG TF better than the MGF?

The TF is the later development, with conventional coil-spring suspension in place of the MGF’s Hydragas, plus revised styling and sharper handling. Mechanically they are close cousins; the TF is generally seen as the more resolved car.

Does the MG TF have head-gasket issues?

Like the MGF, the TF’s K-Series engine can suffer head-gasket failure if cooling is neglected. Look for a documented modern (uprated) gasket and a healthy cooling system.

Is the MG TF a good cheap sports car?

Yes — it is an affordable, mid-engined roadster with strong specialist support. Buy the best-maintained example you can, with cooling-system history, rather than the cheapest.
